Independent Study

2021-2022 School Year

The Castaic Union School District will be offering Independent Study as an option for families to choose to enroll their child in during the 2021-2022 school year.  It is a viable option for students and families who wish to primarily learn from home.  Students’ success requires that parents/guardians/caregivers play a significant role in guiding their child to participate responsibly and regularly, and to follow all expectations written in the Independent Study Written Learning Agreement.  Please read below for specific information.

Who to Contact for Questions:  For questions related to our Independent Study program, please contact District Administrator, Kimberly LePage at [email protected]

Who May EnrollIndependent Study is available to all students, especially students whose health would be put at risk by in-person instruction, as determined by the parent/guardian.  Students outside of the Castaic Union School District may be eligible for independent study if they have met the requirements for an inter-district transfer.

General Requirements:

  • Kindergarten - 3rd Grade: Daily synchronous instruction for all students in these grades throughout the school year.

  • Grades 4-8: Combination of daily live interaction and at least weekly synchronous instruction for all students throughout the school year.

  • Synchronous Instruction: refers to classroom-style instruction or designated small group or one-on-one instruction delivered in person, or in the form of internet or telephonic communication involving live, two-way communication between the teacher and student. Synchronous instruction shall be provided by the teacher of record for that student.

  • Daily Live Interaction: refers to the interaction between the student and Local Education Agency (LEA) classified or certificated staff, and may include peers, provided for the purpose of maintaining school connectedness, including but not limited to: wellness checks, progress monitoring, provision of services and instruction.  This interaction may take place in person or in the form of internet or telephonic communication.

  • Attendance: Students will be required to abide by the rules and regulations related to attendance as set forth through the Castaic Union School District and the California Department of Education.  Any student who misses more than three school days or 60 percent of the instructional days in a school week will be in violation of the student’s written agreement with the District thus resulting in participating in a re-engagement plan and the possibility of having their Independent Study revoked.

  • Daily Schedule: To be determined by the assigned teacher.

  • Written Learning Agreement:

    • A written learning agreement must be signed before a student commences an independent study course.  This will be completed in conjunction with student enrollment.
